All air duct systems need to be cleaned periodically.  In the desert southwest, with our high winds and blowing dust most homes need to be cleaned every three or four years. Evaporative coolers bring in 100% of their air from the outside.  This air can be very dirty and will contaminate your air duct system.  Water from the cooler pads, is blown into the duct and will in time,  cause the metal duct to rust out.
